My Mary Poppins Gym Bag and Locker

I always wonder how other people go to the gym and manage to bring only a small bag.
Despite having my own locker where I leave a bunch of stuff, my gym bag always feels like it’s about to explode. I feel like Mary Poppins (or Dora the Explorer for you youngsters) taking stuff and more stuff out of my backpack.

 
I shower at the gym between 3 and 5 times a week, so I like to leave as much as I can in my locker. I buy doubles of a lot of personal items and just leave one at the gym.

What’s in my locker:
* Makeup: makeup case with brushes, foundation, concealer, loose powder, blush, bronzer, mascara, 2 eye shadow cases, and a few eyeliners
* Hair care: shampoo and conditioner, a couple of hair treatments (the kind you leave on for a few minutes and rinse off), and after shower care such as hair oil, hair gel, heat protector, hair brush, hairdryer
* Body care: deodorant, liquid shower soap, body lotion with SPF and without, body spray, face lotion SPF, perfume, razor, Q-tips, sponge
* Pool gear: flip flops, googles, haircap

What’s in my bag:
* Clean clothes, usually work clothes
* Shoes, usually low/comfy sandals to drive around, and I leave my work sandals in my car to put on when I get to work
* My swimsuit if I’ll be swimming
* A big bath towel
* A small towel to have by me when I work out
* IPod
* Hair ties
* NUUN
* Water bottle
* Keys
* IPhone

London Marathoners: Are Your Legs as Sore as Mine?

First of all, if you ran the London marathon this morning, or any marathon, or any other race, or just went for a run.. hope it was a great one!

No, I didn’t run the London marathon, not even a race, but my legs are so sore.

 
I did an 8K interval run on Thursday with the last 3 intervals being 1 minute (or 250 meters) at 04:00 Min/KM (06:26 Min/Mile). That is fast for me. A long run on Friday, a tempo run on Saturday, and an easy recovery run this morning: 11.6K/7.2M with average pace 05:10 Min/KM (08:19 Min/Mile).

I try not to run more than 3 days in a row, but this weekend it happened that I ran 4.
I ran a bit less distance the previous week because of a race (I skipped the long run), and I wanted to get back to my 60KM/37M a week.
No running tomorrow for sure. Maybe some swimming, if I don’t come up with a good excuse to skip it.

Typical Friday

Friday is the first day of the weekend in Israel, and a great day to be out.
The morning is busy for stores and coffee houses because many people don’t work and have time to do some shopping or go get breakfast.
I enjoy the bustling atmosphere, as long as I don’t have an agenda, and can just be out having a good time, looking around, no stress.

 
For me, first thing in the morning was a nice, easy, can’t ask for better weather, great music in my ears, long run. 21.2K/13.2M at average pace 04:56 Min/KM (07:56 Min/Mile).
A long run on Friday mornings has become routine, and I enjoy every minute of it.

My long run route is perfect, all through the boardwalk from Yaffo to North Tel Aviv, going by the Tel Aviv Port, then by a small airport where sometimes if I’m lucky enough I see a plane land or take off right by me, just a fence between the runway and the running path. Then a bit through Hayarkon Park. And all the way back. If you are in Israel you have to run this route. It makes you want to keep running and running.

 
I felt really good through the whole run, my legs finally felt rested after a few harder weeks. I can’t say I had been training harder, but for some reason my legs had felt tired, maybe I didn’t take enough rest days. Today I felt back to normal and I’m looking forward to a couple of weeks of training before my next race.

I was back home by 09:00 AM, got ready, and we went out to Tel Aviv to walk around and eat.
This is also quite typical of my Friday morning, good food, shopping, and people watching in a fun, young, great city.
I bought a couple of books, looked around the market, and had an Israeli breakfast which I failed to take pictures of because I was so hungry I ate it all too fast.

Spent the afternoon at a local coffee house, 5th coffee of the day, some quality time with the kids making rainbow loom bracelets. If you don’t know what that is, trust me you are lucky.

Do You Drive Like You Run?

We all have a running style, and I’m not referring to our heel strike or pronation.
No, I’m talking about the style that has more to do with our personality.
Are you training to be the fastest you can be? Are you going for distance? Do you mind if someone passes you? Do you try to pass them right back, even when you know you don’t stand a chance? Do you run without measuring your time or distance because it’s of no importance to you?

 
I definitely see some resemblances between my running and my driving.

1) I try to save time:
Both for running and driving, I’m always trying to save a couple of minutes. It’s like a big goal. Does it really matter if I run 21K in 1:40 or 1:42? I’m not even talking about a half marathon race, just a regular long run. And does it matter if I arrive to work at 8:46 or 8:48? I’m supposed to be there at 8:30, it’s already late anyway.

2) I like the feeling of speed:
When I’m running, I really like the feeling of going fast. I say feeling, because sometimes I can be running slow, up a hill, or with sore legs from a previous run. But if I’m making an effort and I feel like I’m going fast, then I’m happy. The same goes for when I’m driving, depending on where I’m driving speed feels differently, but that feeling of going fast does it for me.

3) I’m competitive:
I don’t really compete with people who run much faster than me, that’s silly. And I don’t really compete with people who are slower than me, that’s just stupid. But if I think someone is on a similar level than me, and they pass me, then it’s on. It’s on even if I was on a slow recovery run. It’s on even if I know I’ll pay for it in a few KMs. It’s on despite my better judgment.
For driving I’m more rational than that, but sometimes competitive anyway.

4) I fuck up:
I’ve fucked up in races, started much faster than I should have because there was this girl/guy/dog/tree who I just had to pass (of course she/he passed me right back on the 2nd half of the race). I’ve fucked up in training, didn’t take enough rest days, did too much speed work, got myself injured.
And I’ve fucked up when driving too, most recently yesterday, almost got my license revoked. Yes, I was going fast beyond the speed limit, even fast beyond “you-just-get-a-ticket” limit.

5) I really like it:
Despite the sweat, pain, soreness, stress, nerves, etc., I love running and I love driving, it’s “me” time, half very in the moment and aware of what I’m doing, half doing it automatically and enjoying the silence in my mind and the music in my ears.

Great Excuses for a Bad Race

So you had a bad race. Weeks or months of hard training, all wasted, because your race sucked.
You feel bad, depressed, worthless, mad at yourself and at the world. Your significant other is considering hiding under the kitchen sink.
You worry you’ll never recover from the disappointment, you worry you’ll never get the PR you dream of.

 

1) The course was too hard: What a classic. Those hills, of course, are the perfect excuse for a bad race.

 
2) The weather was less than ideal: You know when it’s so hot you just can’t run fast? You know when it’s too cold you can’t get into the groove? Exactly.

 
3) I tapered wrong: Maybe 5 days of no running ruined my fitness? Maybe 12 hours of no running just wasn’t enough?

 
4) I ate too much the night before: Those extra 200 calories? Totally weighed me down!

 
5) I didn’t rest properly: Two weeks ago I had to get up and pee in the middle of the night, somehow that must have affected my race performance.

 
6) The music on my playlist wasn’t right: The songs weren’t sorted properly so BPMs would go up as the race advanced, how can I PR running to the wrong BPMs?!?!?

 
7) My training was off: I trained too hard, too little, not enough speed work, too much speed work, too many miles, too much of this, too little of that… as long as there’s something to blame for my bad race..

 
8) I didn’t drink enough apple cider vinegar, eat enough chia seeds, or whatever else could have helped me run better: This is no joke people! There are magic substances out there that’ll improve our performance by 200%! No need to run hills! No need to do speed work! No need for long boring runs! Just drink this or eat that and go try out for the Olympics.

 
9) I have too much on my mind: Of course no one else at the race has to deal with all I deal with: kids, the house, a job, painting my nails… come on, they had a clear advantage on me.

 
10) The stars weren’t aligned right: OK I can’t really explain this one, but I’m sure it’s valid.

 
11) I didn’t fuel properly on race morning: My usual breakfast of coffee and a granola bar that works like a charm just didn’t cut it this time. It’s science. A different breakfast for sure would have worked better than my tried and true.

 
12) I couldn’t poop: Just the thought of having to use the bathroom in the middle of the race was enough to slow me down to a crawl.

 
13) My Garmin was acting up: For some reason I couldn’t get something on the display right, and of course my race was ruined.

 
14) Those guys with the black tight tights (or those girls in the matching hot pink short shorts) distracted me: OK this one is true! And worth every second lost.

 
15) I didn’t warm up properly: 2K warm up for a 10K? 3K warm up for a 5K? 1K warm up for a half marathon? I don’t even know anymore. But I’m sure I did it wrong.

 
16) That sign someone was holding messed with my head: I couldn’t really read it, but it was something about running fast, or farting, or frosting?

 
17) I didn’t choose my shoes wisely: The Brooks were slippery, the Mizunos weren’t flat enough, the Adidas are not for distances over 7.1K and I was running a 10K… wrong, wrong, wrong choice!

 
18) My foot/knee/calf/brain/nipple hurt: Come on, something is always hurting a little when you are a runner, why not use it to our advantage for once?

Now on a bit more serious note, as much as I enjoy racing, running is something I do for FUN.
Sure there are added benefits to it that make it a bit more of a serious business, like staying in shape, heart health, avoiding gain weight, etc.
B-U-T.
Still.
Running is fun, and good, and something I’m thankful I get to do.

 
A bad race shouldn’t let me or any of us forget that, lose perspective, feel down for longer than 2 minutes.
Now let’s keep on running, and let’s enjoy every second of it.
